چکیده

How do macroscopic systems react to imposed external forces? Attempts to answer this question by a general principle have a long history. The general feeling is that the macroscopic systems in their reaction to imposed external forces follow some kind of optimization strategy in which their internal structure is changed so that they offer the least possible resistance. What is the potential involved in such optimization? It is often suggested that it is entropy or entropy production. But entropy is a potential arising in thermodynamics of externally unforced macroscopic systems. What exactly shall we understand by a mesoscopic entropy of externally driven systems and how shall we find it for a specific

Parallel in Time Simulation of Multiscale Stochastic Chemical Kinetics

A version of the time-parallel algorithm parareal is analyzed and applied to stochastic models in chemical kinetics. A fast predictor at the macroscopic scale (evaluated in serial) is available in the form of the usual reaction rate equations. A stochastic simulation algorithm is used to obtain an exact realization of the process at the mesoscopic scale (in parallel). The underlying stochastic ...

Contact Geometry of Mesoscopic Thermodynamics and Dynamics

The time evolution during which macroscopic systems reach thermodynamic equilibrium states proceeds as a continuous sequence of contact structure preserving transformations maximizing the entropy. This viewpoint of mesoscopic thermodynamics and dynamics provides a unified setting for the classical equilibrium and nonequilibrium thermodynamics, kinetic theory, and statistical mechanics. One of t...

Mesoscopic kinetic basis of macroscopic chemical thermodynamics: A mathematical theory.

Gibbs' macroscopic chemical thermodynamics is one of the most important theories in chemistry. Generalizing it to mesoscaled nonequilibrium systems is essential to biophysics. The nonequilibrium stochastic thermodynamics of chemical reaction kinetics suggested a free energy balance equation dF^{(meso)}/dt=E_{in}-e_{p} in which the free energy input rate E_{in} and dissipation rate e_{p} are bot...

ultiscale molecular modeling in nanostructured material design and process

Atomistic-based simulations such as molecular mechanics, molecular dynamics, and Monte Carlo-based methods have come into wide use for material design. Using these atomistic simulation tools, we can analyze molecular structure on the scale of 0.1–10 nm. However, difficulty arises concerning limitations of the time and length scale involved in the simulation. Although a possible molecular struct...

Multiscale methods and model order reduction for flow problems in three-scale porous media

A new multiscale method combined with model order reduction is proposed for flow problems in three-scale porous media. We derive an effective three-scale model that couples a macroscopic Darcy equation, a mesoscopic Stokes-Brinkman equation, and a microscopic Stokes equation. A corresponding three-scale numerical method is then derived using the finite element discretization with numerical quad...
